Health & Beauty Tips – Week of August 1st

Beauty Tip- More Coverage, Please!

Normally I like a very sheer foundation especially if you are a little older and also one that perfectly matches your skin tone no matter what age you are. Better to go without than to look like you have a mask on. Sometimes you just need more coverage and Amazonian clay full coverage foundation SPF 15 by Tarte is perfect.

If you have been following my tips, you know that I like Tarte cosmetics since they do not put the majority of the toxic chemicals I try to avoid in their cosmetics and are an eco-friendly company.

The key to getting a flawless finish with this foundation is the brush. It is a very big brush that sort of looks like a kabuki brush. This foundation comes in a tube so just dot a little on your cheeks, chin and forehead and then buff it in with the brush. It blends seamlessly giving good coverage without being heavy. You can get it at Sephora but when I was in there last, I did not see the brush. If you want the brush (you need the brush!) you can get both for a better price at QVC, item # A216501 (both the foundation and the brush).

Health Tip- Coenzyme Q-10 for Migraines

According to Cephalalgia, a magazine published on behalf of the International Headache Society, CoQ-10 can help with the prevention of Migraine headaches. This is important since most medications to date only address migraines once they have already begun. Some of the key points from the trial include 61.3% of the patients achieved at least a 50% reduction in frequency of Migraines by the end of the four month trial. It was also effective against both types of Migraines (Classic and Common). As with most natural remedies it does take more time, the study showed it takes about 5-12 weeks to achieve reduction. The dose used in the study was 150mg daily and gelcaps (which are thought to be better absorbed) were preferred. Side effects mostly of mild GI upset were less than 1%.

Green Tip- Oil and Paper

Paper manufacturing is the 3rd largest user of fossil fuels worldwide according to the American Forest and Paper Association. Try to conserve paper whenever possible. Don’t print something unless it is absolutely necessary; recycle junk mail and newspapers even if you don’t recycle anything else. The more fossil fuel we use the more dependent we are on foreign oil.

Dental Tip- Sorting out Common Misunderstandings Regarding Dental Insurance

You may receive notification from your insurance company stating that dental fees are “higher than usual and customary”. An insurance company surveys a geographic area, calculates an average fee, takes 80% of that fee and considers it customary. Included in this survey are discount dental clinics and managed care facilities which bring down the average.

Any doctor in a high quality private practice will have fees that insurance companies define as higher than “usual and customary”. More often than not, these surveys are outdated. Communications by dental insurance companies that make statements such as “This fee is beyond the level of the allowed benefit” or accusatory that your dentist is charging too much are often an attempt to cover for a plan with limited benefits that was sold to your employer as a “cost-cutting” plan. Don’t let your insurance company dictate your quality of care.
