Health & Beauty Tips – Week of March 26th

Beauty Tip- Go Easy on the “Luminizing”

There are so many products on the market now that have a luminizing effect so be careful not to overdo them. One or two applied with a light hand can make you look glowing, anymore and you look just plain weird. I know we have all seen the supermodel in our favorite high fashion magazine who looks angelic and ethereal with her luminizing eyeshadow, foundation, lipstick, powder and blush but this does not translate well into real life. Also beware of luminizing face products if you have acne or acne scars since it can accentuate these.

Health Tip- We Have the Right to Know

Genetically modified foods (GMO-the O stands for organism) do not have to be labeled as such right now. There is compelling evidence that genetically modified foods can cause health problems and cause long term environmental problems. There is a ballot coming up in California that will make it mandatory for foods that contain GMO’s to be labeled. This is extremely important even if you don’t live in California because it will set a huge precedent. Corn is one of foods right now that is mostly GMO and if you read food labels like I do you will see it is in just about everything. This also goes for anything derived from corn like high fructose corn sweetener. Please donate to the campaign in California to help get this bill passed. Any donation will help fight Monsanto who is sinking millions of dollars into fighting this since they are main suppliers of GMO seeds. Any donation no matter how small will help.

Green Tip- Turn it Off

If every U.S. computer and monitor were turned off at night, the nation could shut down eight large power stations and avoid emitting 7 million tons of CO2 every year.

Dental Tip- Don’t Chew Ice

Don’t eat ice cubes, it can result in fractured teeth. Older fillings are made of silver, which doesn’t bond to teeth like the tooth colored fillings and can cause tiny cracks because of the stress of chewing hard items like cubes, candy or unpopped popcorn kernels. These kinds of things can also fracture and crack teeth that have not had any type of restoration so best to avoid them.
