Beauty Tip- Avoid “Mom” Jeans for a More Youthful Appearance
For us ladies over 40, dressing age appropriate without looking dowdy or old can be challenging at times. Jeans should be a part of every woman’s wardrobe no matter what her age. Finding the right pair of jeans can be daunting given the number of choices that are out there. First and foremost, you must be prepared to try on a lot of different brands and styles. Once you find a style that flatters you then get at least two pair, one to wear with flats and one to wear with heels. Since this post is focusing on the fashion faux pas known as the “mom” jean, I want to start out with what not to wear.
So what is the dreaded “mom” jean exactly? First, the waist is very high. This means that the actual waist of the jean fits the smallest part of your waist. This makes the rise very long. Next, the pockets are small and set very high on the hip. The illusion that these two things create is a butt that is flat and stretches downward for miles which is not a good look for anyone. The legs are also tapered and they are light or acid washed. If you want to appear more youthful and you have a pair of these here is a fashion tip that will take 20 years off of you: go to your closet right now and throw them away! Notice I said appear more youthful and not “young,” there is a difference. You don’t want to wear jeans that your teenage daughter would wear either lest you end up looking like you are trying to look twenty which backfires making you look older.
A few simple rules will help you start narrowing down what to try on when you are shopping for jeans. First go for a rise that sits about one inch below the belly button. Next, go for a leg that is straight and not tapered. A good way to check this is to fold the lower part of the leg up until the hem hits right above the knee area and if the folded part of the jean is skinnier then the leg is tapered. It should be the same size or slightly wider if it is a boot cut. Look for a darker wash jean which looks more modern and is more slimming. A little bit of stretch is good (not more than 2%). The bottom part of the pocket should generally be in line with the upper part of the thigh. Avoid pockets that are too big (too masculine) and too small which tend to make the behind look larger. One last rule of thumb is to always go one size down in jeans since they stretch. Now go and find your perfect jean!
Health Tip- Avoid Canned Goods
BPA or bisphenol- A is the chemical that is found in plastic and can cause health problems. Expectant mothers and children should avoid exposure since BPA is especially harmful to developing brains and nervous systems. The lining used for canned goods contains BPA so avoiding or limiting canned goods can help to reduce your exposure. It is also found in the lining of soda cans so there is another good reason to give up soda.
Green Tip- Look for LED Holiday Lights
New LED lights use up to 90% less energy than conventional bulbs! So look for them and use less for a bigger savings.
Dental Tip- Choose Sugarless Cinnamon Gum
Did you know that Cinnamon can actually kill bacteria in your mouth? Choose cinnamon flavored gum sweetened with Xylitol for a double whammy. Xylitol has been shown to also significantly reduce oral bacteria. Look for Spry brand, It has the optimum concentration of xylitol and all natural ingredients.
