Health Tip-Create a Bedtime Ritual

SleepIn the age of electronics it is hard to put down our phones and other devices yet they can interfere with sleep. More and more research suggests that we are a sleep deprived nation and it is taking a toll on our health. Lack of regular quality sleep can lead to obesity and other health problems. Here is one tip from the Mayo clinic that can help you sleep better:

Do the same things each night to tell your body it’s time to wind down. This might include taking a warm bath or shower, reading a book, or listening to soothing music — preferably with the lights dimmed. Relaxing activities can promote better sleep by easing the transition between wakefulness and drowsiness.

Be wary of using the TV or other electronic devices as part of your bedtime ritual. Some research suggests that screen time or other media use before bedtime interferes with sleep.

A word of caution if you read at night, do not use an electronic device since they emit light just like phones and tablets that can interfere with sleep. Get yourself a good old-fashioned book or if you have an older Kindle (Paperwhite) that is not backlit this is okay. Unfortunately, they do not make them anymore. I got a used one on Amazon.

Green Tip- Replace that Vinyl Shower Curtain

ecofriendlyTrade the vinyl for PVC-free plastic, cloth, or bamboo. You’ll avoid more than 108 different chemicals vinyl emits into the air, as well as that unpleasant plastic-y odor.

Dental Tip-Cough Drops Can be Loaded with Sugar

cough_dropsJust because cough drops are sold in the medicine aisle doesn’t mean they’re healthy. Most are loaded with sugar. So after soothing your throat with a lozenge, be sure to brush well. Whether the sugar comes from a cough drop or a hard candy, it reacts with the sticky plaque that coats your teeth. Then bacteria in the plaque convert the sugar into an acid that eats away at tooth enamel. Hello, cavities. Brought to you by WedMD.

For the Ladies

Beauty Tip-Downplay Dark Circles

If you have dark circles under your eyes avoid eye shadow colors like purple, violet, gray and blue as these tend to accentuate dark circles due to blue undertones. Also avoid too much liner and mascara on the lower part of the eye which can also draw attention to dark circles. If you have dark circles from habitual lack of sleep then you need to reorganize your life to include a solid 8 hours of quality sleep. Sleep is the most essential beauty aid for looking your best.
