SAN ANTONIO (May 13, 2011) – For decades, patients needing dental crowns and bridges have endured the discomfort and foul taste of material used to take molds of their teeth. This traditional procedure is not only tough on patients, but is difficult for dentists trying to get accurate impressions.
Thanks to the latest in 3D digital imaging technology – the Cadent iTero Digital Impression System – patients of San Antonio cosmetic dentist Edward Camacho can say goodbye to this messy, uncomfortable procedure. Camacho’s Cosmetic Dentistry of San Antonio is one of the few dental practices in the San Antonio region with the iTero system, part of CDSA’s commitment to being a leader in high-tech, eco-friendly dentistry.
In the traditional method for dental impressions, the dental staff uses a putty-like material in a tray that is placed over the patient’s teeth. After several minutes, the molding material hardens, leaving an impression of the teeth. A lab tech can then use this impression to create a “positive” model of the teeth, from which crowns and bridges can be made to fit the patient’s mouth.
“Many patients choke and gag with the gooey molding material filling their mouths,” Dr. Camacho said. “And many patients complain about the awful taste.”
With iTero, the dental staff uses a hand-held device that captures digital images of the teeth in 100,000 data points for each scan. Software assembles these pictures into an accurate three-dimensional model of the scanned area, from individual teeth to the bite pattern and the big picture. This process is viewed on a chair-side screen.
Afterward, CDSA sends this digital model to a local lab – one of the top dental laboratories in the country – for rapid and accurate creation of the restorations. (is this accurate?)
Dr. Camacho says this cutting-edge system has greatly improved both his patients’ experience and also his staff’s ability to create accurate restorations efficiently:
“The iTero system has been a huge improvement over old-school dental impression molds. The traditional method placed pressure on the teeth, causing them to move from their natural position. This introduced errors for the dental lab technician who was now working on a model of the teeth different from the way they truly were in the mouth.”
“To overcome this error, dentists had to spend time grinding the biting surface of crowns to get them to fit in the patient’s mouth. Too much grinding compromises the integrity of the crown. On the other hand, the technological advancement of the ITero allows for a clean impression with no messy goo, no gagging and no bad taste, which is so much easier on the patient. There is just no way that a traditional impression can record the accuracy that a digital impression can, no matter how skilled the dentist is.”
He adds: “Most importantly, it allows the absolute most precise crowns and bridges ever available with shorter easier appointments for the patient. It has truly revolutionized the accuracy and ease of making impressions. Patients and staff just love it.”
